It was a dream start!

That is how Banyana Banyana manager Fran Hilton-Smith described their 4-0 win over Algeria during their opening African Women's Championships in Warri, Nigeria, on Saturday.

South Africa started the game like a house on fire when Veronica Phewa scored the fastest goal of the championship with the game only 10 seconds old.

Phewa grabbed the second goal in the 31st minute with a cracker from outside the 18 yard area. Mpumi Nyandeni made it 3-0 seven minutes later.

Joe-Ann Solomons also got her name on the score-sheet in the 89th minute to see South Africa topping Group A on goal difference.

"It was a good start to win the match, which will obviously ease the pressure in the camp," said Hilton-Smith.

Banyana Banyana play wounded Equatorial Guinea in the second game tomorrow.

Equatorial Guinea are expected to spit fire after suffering a 4-2 defeat by defending champions Nigeria on Saturday.

Safa president Dr Molefi Oliphant has congratulted Banyana following their win in Nigeria.
