The Mpumalanga education department is to improve the teaching of maths and science in the province by sending a group of high school teachers on a study visit to Japan.

The provincial executive council approved the study trip at its fortnightly meeting in Belfast last week.

Education MEC Siphosezwe Masango said teachers should be masters of the subjects they teach.

Mpumalanga has been sending teachers on study trips to Japan since 2004, and Japanese volunteers also teach science and maths in the province as part of a corporate agreement.

The group will be leaving tomorrow.
