About 340 people were arrested during a three-day crime sweep in Kimberley in the Northern Cape, police said yesterday.
Captain Tony Modise of the Northern Cape police said the crime sweep was a joint operation by the SAPS and members of the SANDF. He said the arrests included those of 40 wanted criminals.
The areas of Galeshewe, Roodepan and Modder Rivier in Kimberley had been kept under observation during the operation from Thursday until yesterday morning.
Some of the arrests made had been for murder, rape and assault while others had been for theft, drunken driving and malicious damage to property. Dagga, worth an estimated R40000, was also confiscated.
Modise said police had set up roadblocks in and around the area and had patrolled various streets. An air patrol had also been conducted.
Provincial police commissioner Zuki Mbambo said that Northern Cape police would be launching a crime prevention campaign during the festive season. - Sapa
