Police Captain Jabulani Mdletshe said Nokuthula Sibiya, 22, of Enseleni in northern KwaZulu-Natal, had left her three-week-old baby in the care of her cousin, Zwakele Mhlongo, 21.
Several men entered the house where Mhlongo was staying and ransacked it, but ended up stealing only Mhlongo's cellphone and the baby.
"The motive of the kidnapping is not yet known but the police have opened an armed robbery and kidnapping case for further investigation," Mdletshe said. - Dudu Busani
