BAGHDAD - The death toll among US forces in Iraq this month reached the highest level in nearly two years yesterday after the deaths of four US marines and one sailor in the volatile Anbar province.

The military says 96 US troops have died so far this month, equalling the level for the whole of October last year. The highest monthly death toll before that came in January last year, when 107 US troops were killed.

The climbing numbers of US deaths have been a main factor behind rising anti-war sentiment in the US, fueling calls for President George Bush to change tactics.

The US military said the five service members killed included a sailor assigned to the 3rd Naval Construction Regiment.

Two of the marines were attached to Regimental Combat Team 5, and two others to Regimental Combat Team 7. Names were withheld pending notification of their families. - Sapa-AP
