Soweto is getting greener, thanks to a donation of 450 trees by Willard car batteries.
The trees will be planted throughout the sprawling township. They will be handed over today at a ceremony at Soweto's Mountain of Hope traditional culture park in Chiawelo.
The event will feature a marimba band, traditional dancing, songs and music.
The donation is part of the company's "Go Green Willard" campaign, which is managed by Trees for Homes, an award- winning programme of Food & Trees for Africa (FTFA) and partners of Greening of Soweto.
Willard and other donors are helping FTFA to reach its target of planting 200000 trees for homes by 2010.
Johannesburg City Parks aims to plant another 100000 trees along Soweto roads and in parks.
"These tree distribution and planting projects are having a big effect on the environment of Soweto and encourage a sense of community and civic pride," said FTFA project officer Joe Matimba.
"We are very proud to be contributing towards environmental development and the socio-economic growth of our country through tree planting, which we see as investing in the community.
"Planting trees is an investment in the future and leaves a legacy for future generations," said Matimba.
