Police must screen volunteers carefully

I totally agree with the writer of the letter, Crime pays because we buy, in Sowetan yesterday.

The reason for the high rate of crime, especially in the townships, is because in the townships 99percent of crime never gets reported. That alone makes townships a haven for criminals.

My other concern is that some people who volunteer to be block- watch members are themselves habitual defaulters of by-laws.

But they are accepted by police, who are desperate to involve communities in crime-fighting.

Are these volunteers checked for crime records? Some could be abusers or drug users.
