Figo the consummate professional

MILAN - Even though Luis Figo's performances for Inter Milan in his second year have been far from impressive, they have not dented the reputation he has built on and off the pitch in his successful career.

MILAN - Even though Luis Figo's performances for Inter Milan in his second year have been far from impressive, they have not dented the reputation he has built on and off the pitch in his successful career.

The star midfielder, who turns 34 on November 4, started the season in August receiving high marks for his gritty showing in a 4-3 win over Roma in the Italian Supercup, firing home a textbook free kick to complete an amazing reversal from three goals down.

He has since played some patchy games in the early part of the Serie A season and in the Champions League, some of them bordering on insufficiency, but few Inter fans jeered him even in the couple of cases when he was substituted.

In 18 years of professional football Figo's grit, inventiveness and sportsmanship have delighted the fans of his hometown club Sporting Lisbon, Spanish powerhouses Barcelona and Real Madrid, and Inter. - Reuters
