A big rush is expected today, with the deadline to register for the 15th edition of the Nedbank Soweto Marathon being at 5pm.

The popular marathon, which will return to Soweto for the first time in 14 years, will take place on November 5.

"We have made all the necessary arrangements to deal with a big volume of entries tomorrow [today]," said Leonard Chuene, Athletics South Africa president.

"We would like to make a special plea to all the people who would like to participate in this year's marathon to register before 5pm on Friday.

"There won't be any favours once the deadline has passed. There is a lot of chaos on the day of marathons where we accept entries.

"It messes us up when we accept entries on the day of the marathon because we normally have between 3000 to 4000 people turning up to register.

"The support we have been getting to date has been good, we are also delighted that more people are also registering for the 10km and schools' challenge," said Chuene, who will participate in the 10km road race.

Chuene said runners who still want to register are requested to approach their clubs or provincial structures.

"We also have registrations forms at all the major sports shops in the country. We are expecting more than 10 000 people to compete this year."

The winners in the senior men's and women's categories will each take home a whopping R60000. Winners in the 10km will each get R5000.

Kabelo, Alaska and DJ Bongs will entertain participants and spectators at Elkah Stadium in Rockville, where the marathon will start and finish.

Runners who want to know more about where to register for the Soweto Marathon should phone ASA at (011) 880-5800/6.
