Promoter Branco Milenkovic has promised to lodge a bid for South Africa to host the WBC's 46th annual convention in 2008 or 2009.

Croatia hosts this year's convention. Milenkovic, who enjoys a warm working relationship with WBC president Jose Sulaiman, leaves on Sunday for the convention, which starts on October 28 and ends on November 4.

Sulaiman, who has been the WBC boss for almost 30 years, also has a strong personal bond with former president Nelson Mandela and President Thabo Mbeki.

"I promise to do everything in my power to convince the board of governors to vote in favour of South Africa to host it in 2008 or 2009," said Milenkovic.

"We are hosting the Soccer World Cup in 2010, so I feel that by bringing the WBC convention here for a second time - the first was in 1998 - it will be another ideal opportunity for the country to showcase her skills of hosting international events."

Milenkovic said he will propose that Johannesburg be the host city: "We have staged some major boxing events in Gauteng of late, further endorsing the province's claim to be the 'Home of Champions'."

Accompanying him will be ring officials Alfred Buqwana, Thabo Spampool, Ishmael Khoali, Joseph Chaane, Sylvia Mokaila and Cyril Gwiji.
