So kool in a kaftan

We love the kaftan because it's the perfect thing for summer season, is made of natural cotton and is really affordable.

Fashion stylist Iko Mashiloane says the kaftan is a quiet sensation that needs a no-holds-barred approach.

"It's already in a league of its own so why restrict its use to specific functions, colours or items? When I look at an ensemble outfit revolving around a kaftan, I feel like showing people: this is how you dress up to stand out in the crowd."

We bought two shirts from the Oriental Plaza and paid only R40 each, but we had to try about 10 shops before we found the real thing for men. Similar styles were obviously for women, despite the shop assistants' claim they are unisex.

LOOK 1: KAFTAN AS PART OF A SUIT

The kaftan is worn with a white linen suit because the lightness of the fabrics blend well. Accessorised with sunglasses and white shoes, the look is simply glam.

LOOK 2: KAFTAN WITH JEANS

This is the look most people favour, but make sure the hairstyle is right - it should be ethnic hair. The baby blue kaftan we chose picked up the navy blue in the jeans.

LOOK 3: KAFTAN WITH CAPRI PANTS

Add sunglasses and you have the look of a movie star. The model, Mani Emilio, says he found the look quite liberating and cool. "You can go from the glam look to a picnic, beach party and a shopping look, just by changing shoes."

LOOK 4: KAFTAN GOES CORPORATE

Men prefer a look that can work seven days a week, day and night, and in and out of the office and the kaftan is versatile enough to wear to the office too.
