We are saddened by the sudden passing of Lebo Mathosa, the dynamic young, almost unfading African music sensation, whose hold on fans, rivals and detractors was unwavering.

Lebo, affectionately known as the drama queen, was something really special in the local and international music tapestry, and promising things were beginning to swing her way in her artistic life. Her death is untimely and a really sad loss to South Africa. She occupied the void left by the likes of the truly inimitable Brenda Fassie.

Lebo was riding on the crest of a wave spawned by her latest album, and live shows as well as possible collaborations with overseas stars.

Lebo's enigmatic persona was equally enthralling, with her own, unique black blonde look, whose hallmarks were the micro-skirts and pants, captivating choreography and her own steadfast belief in herself.

She was strongest when opposing diatribes against her sexual preferences and orientation, which she gallantly fought to keep out of the media glare, forcing all to focus on her artistic life instead. We have lost a musical princess. Our condolences to her family and friends.

May her soul rest in peace.
