What's going on with the taxi recapitalisation programme?

After months of deliberations and agreements with the government, taxi operators have threatened to go on strike - again - over the programme.

Though Transport Minister Jeff Radebe has warned that the programme was on an irreversible path, the continued protests by the operators is cause for concern.

We appreciate the minister's bold move to rid our roads of unroadworthy taxis.

But it seems that his new plans - which are supported by the national taxi body - are misunderstood or rejected by a certain section of operators.

This makes it imperative for the South African National Taxi Council to urgently meet representatives of all relevant bodies to explain the plan for those still in doubt.

The taxi industry is a very sensitive business. All efforts must be made to implement the recapitalisation programme without impediment.
