Popular South African pop diva Lebo Mathosa had been partying with friends before she was driven to her death in the early hours of yesterday morning.

The singer was travelling back to Johannesburg when the accident happened. She was with a friend, Nhlanhla. At the time of the accident Lebo was a passenger in her luxury Toyota Prado Land Cruiser.

Lebo's Sunday started out lazy before she joined friends at a party that was hosted by Yfm's Bondo Ntuli.

Recalling their afternoon together, friend Dineo Ranaka said: "I was with Lebo at the party and she was looking very bubbly. She talked to almost everyone, jumping around. Lebo was very happy yesterday. It's almost as if she knew she was going."

Getting down with the star at Ntuli's party was party animal S'bu Leope.

The natty dresser and colourful Lebo was still mourning her father's recent death. She had said she had lost the man who had supported her career "through thick and thin".

While her management, Real Concerts, said she was going to record next year, Sowetan had been reliably told that Lebo had just gone back to the studio last Wednesday, with DJ Christos, to record.

"I've lost the two most important people in my life, people who I wished could have lived longer to see my success and the effort they have put behind it. I'm deeply hurt and will miss Lebo in the same way I still miss Brenda," Somizi Mhlongo said.

As news of the singer's death spread, Mandoza, 3Sum, Ntando, Mafikizolo, Spikiri, Boom Shaka's Theo and Junior, Thandiswa Mazwai, Greg Maloka, Sash and Doc Shebeleza could not hide their grief.

Said Mandoza: "Lebo was like a sister to me. South Africa has lost a great talent."
