NEW DELHI - Maoist rebels have killed a top police official and three civilians, and two of their cadres were shot dead by the police in separate incidents in two Indian states.

A local TV news channel reported that Jaswinder Singh, a senior police official in charge of the government's anti-rebel operations in the eastern Orissa state, was shot dead by rebels in the southern Koraput district yesterday.
