Perseverance is the mother of success, so the old adage goes.

This was the strong message from Orlando Pirates striker Tshepo "Figo'' Mokone to youngsters at the Coca-Cola Dona's Mates Soccer Development finals in Orange Farm at the weekend.

"If you want to build a soccer career in future, you must start showing your talent at such development tournaments," Mokone said during his motivational speech

The 32-year-old Mokone, who lives in Orange Farm, was spotted at the same tournament before he was recruited by Pirates' development team, Yebo Yes.

More than 3 000 enthusiastic spectators, mostly youngsters, were entertained to a five-star soccer display by the participants.

Soweto Villa Marseille were R12000 richer after beating Mareizer United 2-1 in the exciting seniors' final. The runners-up received R6000.

In the under-17 section, Dona's Mates beat Vaal Professionals 5-4 on penalties.

A-Z Academy were crowned the under-14 champions and Vaal Milano walked away with the under-12 title.

Tournament coordinator James "Maradona'' Shabangu thanked the community and sponsors for their support. Sowetan, once again, received a citation in appreciation for its coverage of amateur soccer.
