Cosatu president Willie Madisha and jazz legend Jonas Gwangwa were among the recipients of the second Anglo Platinum Limpopo Achievers Awards held in Polokwane at the weekend.

Others who received the award on Saturday were Thobela FM sports presenter and commentator Simon Ramafalo, community builder Anna Moremi, visual artist Nora Mabasa and environmentalist Clive Walker.

The awards were established to recognise people from Limpopo - from captains of industry to artists, sports stars and community builders.

All the recipients received a statuette, a certificate and R5000, which they will donate to charitable organisations.

Oscar Phasha, the executive organiser, said the awards would encourage people to work hard in their respective fields.

"It is good to recognise our own people for putting the Limpopo province on the map. We must acknowledge their invaluable contribution while they are still alive.

"We have decided that the Anglo Platinum Limpopo Achievers Awards will be presented yearly," Phasha said.

Simon Tebele, head of corporate communications at Anglo Platinum, said they viewed their interaction with the communities near their operations as important and that is why the company involved itself with awards.

The glittering event was attended by provincial MECs, government officials, councillors, mayors and chiefs from around the province.

Serobi Maja, the chief executive of the Limpopo Gambling Board, and golfer Retief Goosen were among those who received the award last year.
