Clothes to boost kids' self-esteem

Are you a parent who likes their kids not to be a wallflower? Do you believe in individuality that should define your child from a tender age?

Then Butter Pudding clothing may just be for your little one.

Founded two years ago by fashion designer and mother of two daughters, Papama Ramogase, the cool kiddies clothing line seeks to promote individuality and uniqueness in kids through their clothes.

The range has got a sense quirkiness and is equally funky. Ramogase says that she has always had the idea of starting a unique children's clothing line, but had to put it on the back burner to pursue other interests.

"After design school, I started my career as a fashion designer and then branched out into fashion media (print, music and television) and retail for a long time. Even though I was working on super-exciting projects, I started planning and mapping out my business idea, because I'm a creator at heart.

"I started it small and allowed it (to) grow organically. Last year, I left my job of nine years to give the business more attention," she says.

The idea came about after her frustration with not finding clothes unique enough for her daughter, she says, so she decided to create it herself.

"When I had my first child six years ago, I realised there was a gap in the kiddies apparel market for something unique, yet affordable."

Her love for the fusion of simplicity and the aesthetics is even reflected in the name itself, which sounds delicious.

"The name reflects my love for simplicity in design. Butter pudding is a dessert that's made of the simplest ingredients; bread, eggs, milk and butter. [These] you always have at home, but when you mix them up something delicious comes out!

"Also, I just love the way the name rolls off my tongue!" Ramogase describes the clothing range as chic, yet comfy and practical, because style should always be functional, as she says.

"It's the antithesis of logo-branded clothes. It's for those who seek individuality and magic; those who want the personalities of their children to shine through their clothes, not compete with it."

Currently, Butter Pudding caters for kids aged two to nine, both boys and girls. The clothes are affordably priced, from R230 to R520.

Behind the unique clothing is a message of positive reinforcement, building self-esteem and being empowered.

"Every kid needs to grasp this concept from a very early age, in order to grow up into a balanced self-assured adult."

Ramogase says the response to Butter Pudding clothing has been overwhelmingly positive, and says they are already working on their first full collection.

"It is to be marketed and sold in France, just in time for Christmas. Super excited!"
