South African women are starting to leave harmful hair relaxers and hair line damaging weaves behind and embracing their natural hair.

This hair revolution is what inspired Itumeleng Mogatusi to launch the Natural Hair Expo.

The event is scheduled to take place this Saturday at Turbine Hall in Newtown Precinct with over 40 exhibitors showcasing their products and sharing hair care tips with attendees.

“Women needed to be reminded how beautiful their natural hair is,” says Mogatusi.

“Hair brings us together as women, but it also reminds people to know who they are and find their purpose” she adds.

“It celebrates African identity and how people view themselves. How you show up to the world is how you would be perceived. It goes beyond looking good, but also speaks to who you are as a woman and what defines you,” says Mogatusi.

Mabutribe owned by Tlhologelo Mabelane is one of the exhibitors who will be showcasing their product at the event.

She described the event as one that is for Africans to appreciate and understand their hair; how it grows and how it should be taken care of.

The exhibition will also offer give-aways, music performances, displays of numerous products not available in stores as well as the chance to chat to experts in the hair industry.

“We have a total of 42 exhibitors including MPL, Black like Me, Brown Child, Ndalo naturals, amongst others,” says Mogatusi.

Tickets are R90 per person and free for children under 12.
