It's Heritage Day. Then a day later it’s officially the weekend. Most people will make it into a long weekend if they can.
And there’s nothing South Africans love more than a long weekend. That one extra day at home makes all the difference. But what will you do with it?
There are a couple of activities that can be done this public holiday that continue on to the weekend.
Sowaii or Soweto in Hawaii
This will be an event that brings the island to the streets of Soweto. Think sand, pineapples and grass skirts.
Thandi Mavata is one of the organizers of the Soweto meets Hawaii event. It will be happening from the 24th-26th of September at Walter Sisulu Square. This will be an event where the whole family can have some fun.
There will be various stalls including food, they’ll sports like volley ball and beach ball. There will also be photobooth as well and a whle lot more to give you that Hawaii vibe. The event plans to boost community and break the stereotype that black people don’t dress up for costume parties Mavata said.
Homo naledi
Go and see the newest discovery at Maropeng.
The recent discoveries of fossilized bones which represents a new species of human ancestor scientist said. The bones where found within the Sterkfontein caves. There is an exhibition going on currently, so take the family along and go and see a part of history.
Maropeng will be open until 19h00 on Fridays and Saturdays until 11 October to allow more visitors a chance to see the Homo naledi fossils.
Go to the Zoo
The zoo is an old favourite. You can take the little ones and spend the whole day there. Have a picnic and snap some pictures with family and friends.
Go quad biking in Soweto
If you are the adventurous type, you can go quad biking in Soweto or bungee jumping. Take a tour down Vilakazi street and soak in the atmosphere of the biggest township in South Africa.
You can go the Saturday market
Saturday markets have become increasingly popular and they are a great place to sit back, sip on a smoothie and enjoy some quality tie with loved ones. They are also great places to find unique gifts and long sought after books and knicknaks.
On Saturday the 26th there are many markets to choose from such as the Neighbourgoods Market which will be on 73 Juta Street.
Panorama Flea Market, situated off Klipriver Drive, Mulbarton. This market has over 400 stalls and live entertainment.
