Five stories that will restore your faith in humanity

With the many social media platforms the number of citizens filming tragic incidents to post online has risen. In most cases a person will film something before helping somebody.

Here are a few stories where people helped first instead of whipping out their phone:

Crowd in London

On the 28th of May, a unicyclist collided with a double-decker bus in north east London. The unicyclist was trapped under the bus. An extraordinary thing happened, the people sitting in the various restaurants and passerby’s immediately gathered and lifted the bus off the cyclist. Witnesses say close to a hundred people lifted the bus. The cyclist’s leg was crushed. An off duty paramedic was on the scene and helped stabilize him till emergency services arrived.

Mkhululi Nsibande:

In Rosettenville, south of Johannesburg, on the 25th of May; a girl was returning home from school and was attacked and mauled by pitbulls.

The grade 4 leaner was attacked by three pitbulls in her own yard while people stood by and watched in horror and fear. A neighbour, Mkhululi Nsibande broke a branch off a tree and armed himself with a hammer, jumped the fence and rescued the little 9 year old girl.

“I couldn’t stand there and watch her being attacked by these dogs. While outside I spotted a police van, I asked them to help. They were scared to go into the property. I took a branch of a tree and a hammer, jumped the fence and rescued the girl,” Nsibande told the SouthernCourier.

Jeandré Potgieter:

A grade 9 pupil saved a woman from her burning home. Jeandre Potgieter was with his grandfather and uncle when they responded to a fire at a home in Germiston. Potgieter who suffers from asthma, saw the woman in the kitchen of the burning house and dragged her out. He and the woman were treated for smoke inhalation on the scene. The woman was however arrested and charged with arson.   

José Rosario

In March of 2015 José Rosario lost his life after helping save the life of a drowning 12 year old boy.

Rosario a retired NYPD officer was on vacation in Puerto Rico, and drowned shortly after helping the boy.  Rosario had spotted him having trouble staying afloat in the choppy water, and had dived in the ocean to save him. He placed the boy on top of a rock. He then was pulled under by a wave and drowned. Rosario had rescued another child from dying near the same spot three years prior. 

Johannesburg Metro bus driver

In April 2015 a metrobus driver was shot and in the abdomen trying to save his passengers. An unknown number of suspects opened fire on the bus as it stopped, and then boarded and the passengers were robbed and one was also injured.
