The Good, the Bad & the Side-Eye

The Editor of our sister publication The Daily Planet, Pearl Boshomane, brings you a weekly roundup of hot lifestyle trends on the web. Some of it is pretty awesome and some of it deserves some serious side-eye. Read on to find out what you may have missed in this week's edition of The Good, the Bad & the Side-Eye.

  • Let's start it off on a good note, shall we? Congrats to The Soil! Their album, Nostalgic Moments, has gone gold. We love it when our people do well. Read about it here.

  • DJ Black Coffee is the subject of a new documentary. Part of the Resident Advisor and SONOS Origins series, it takes us into the life of the musician: from his upbringing and his accident to the huge career he has today. Watch it here.

  • The most expensive toaster in the world costs over R10,000. Made by the Italian appliance brand Bugatti (no relation to the car), the Neon toaster has glass walls and it can cook steak. Great for showing off to your poorer friends, don’t you think? Read all about it here.

  • Someone’s trying to bring back socks and sandals. Was that ever a thing, even? An American shoe brand called Teva has released a look book, trying to convince us that socks and sandals – together – are, in fact, tres chic. We think not. Anyone who wears socks and sandals should never, ever get laid. The end. Read the full story here.

  • In sad news, Nokia is leaving us. That’s right: the legendary cellphone brand that brought us the 3310, the banana phone and the greatest game of all time (Snake!) is dead. RIP to a legend.

  • The winner of this week’s side-eye is Steve Harvey. The comedian/ author/ talk show host has launched a new dating website that aims to make women “more dateable”. He really needs to quit trying to tell women what to do. We are so, so over this man. He needs to take several seats. Read more here.
