New road race to take place in 25 countries

A new running race called Wings for Life World Run designed to get runners pounding the pavement in at least 25 countries at the same time on May 4, all in an effort to raise money for spinal cord injury research.

Energy drink maker Red Bull is organizing a new event, but you won't need to cliff dive or base jump.

The company has launched a new running race called Wings for Life World Run designed to get runners pounding the pavement in at least 25 countries at the same time on May 4, all in an effort to raise money for spinal cord injury research.

Races sites are expected on six continents, with runners starting the race at 10 am UTC (and equivalent times around the globe). Runners in California will start at 3 am local time while competitors in Germany will set off at noon. Runners in Taiwan have a 6 pm start.

The race has a twist: race participants won't run a set distance, but rather, the finish line will be chasing them. This is how the race website explains it: half an hour after the start signal sounds and the first runners leave the start line, official catcher cars will set off at each course, pursuing the runners. "This pace will accelerate at determined intervals to a rigid global schedule," the site says. When the catcher car passes a runner, their race is over, and a shuttle will take them back to the start area. The goal is have a single man and woman left running in each race venue around the globe, to be crowned champions.

Race locations will include cities in the US, UK, Germany, Canada, Mexico, Ireland, France, Russia, New Zealand, Italy, Turkey, Peru, South Africa, Taiwan, India, South Korea, and Romania.

According to the race's website, 100 percent of proceeds will go to the Wings for Life Foundation, which funds research into curing spinal cord injuries.
