Last Friday celebrities took part in encouraging children to read, in celebration of OR Tambo’s 7th birthday.
The international airport held a reading session for Chivirikani Primary School, where a maximum of 187 grade one children from Katlehong rubbed shoulders with authors and celebrities who engaged at their level on how to read at a young age.
Ambassador of Arts and Culture, Tebogo Ditshego who is also nominated for Mzansi's Sexiest for his intellectual sex appeal, educated the youngsters about the importance of education.
“It is important to read books, it’s the right tool to a bright future.
“I had to read books and go to school in order to one day stand in front of you. Reading should be a leisure activity in your daily lives.”
According to statistics provided by SA Book Development council, only 14% of South Africans read books regularly and only 5% of parents read to their children.
“This is scary and it is up to us to do something about this crisis, we need the youth to be the future of the country.
O.R Tambo International Airport General Manager, Tebogo Mekgoe says, the book reading session was unveiled at the Oliver Reginald Tambo Memorial Exhibition as a way of embracing the legacy of Oliver Tambo.
“This is an important drive for us to encourage reading amongst youngsters, Oliver Tambo was a teacher himself and believed in the power of education.
“As a company we believe that education is the most powerful tool for economic social emancipation for South Africa.”
Rhythm City’s actress Lehlohonolo Phiri and Generations Katlego Danke were one of the celebrities involved in shaping the future of the little ones through reading.
Phiri emphasized the importance of parents getting involved in their children’s education.
She says, “children look up to parents and learn from them. It would be nice for parents to make reading a lifestyle in their households instead of making it seem like a chore.
“Taking time to hone your own into a greater being starts at home, these children are empowered and they need someone who will go the extra mile from.”
