'Go for long-term goals'

Advice on how to change your life

AT THE beginning of every year people are enthusiastic about their "new plans". But not everyone sticks to their plan of action, which is known as new year's resolutions.

To stick to the plan requires discipline and commitment.

Life coach Pontsho Manzi says she doesn't encourage people to set new year's resolutions.

"I believe it's better to have goals in life than resolutions every year. People must have a plan covering how to grow from year to year, as opposed to resolutions," she says.

"The most important thing before you set goals for yourself is to recognise your purpose in life, because without a sense of purpose your life will continue to feel empty regardless of what you achieve. A purpose is the big picture of a person's life and goals will follow the purpose," she explains.

Manzi says most people don't realise their resolutions because resolutions are not permanent.

"Resolutions are a list of things that people plan when they are happy and then never follow through. They are wish lists, not life plans, and they turn out to be unrealistic," she says.

Manzi says people should ditch resolutions and have a growth plan for life, with milestones based on realistic expectations, born out of self-discovery and strengths.

Our favourite celebrities share their plans for the year and what they think of resolutions..

  • Live AMP presenter Luthando Shosha says she doesn't make new year's resolutions.

"They put unnecessary pressure on one and we tend to have a long and unrealistic list. I have goals that aren't dictated by a new year, but rather what Iwant to achieve," she says.

Shosha adds that she has a few things she would like to do. One of them is getting back to radio.

  • Musician Tshepo "Howza" Mosese says he has one major plan this year.

"I plan to work harder than last year and also to get my new music group, The Peanut Gallery, to the public," he says.

  • Isidingo actress Letoya Mangezi says she doesn't have specific new year's resolutions, but plans to have more quality time with her family.

"I want to surround myself with love, light and success and to spend more fun time with my children," Mangezi says.

  • Soccer veteran Helman Mkhalele says he will keep spreading the word of God this year.

Mkhalele says: "People need to get back to basics when it comes to their faith by always involving God in their plans.

"I will also continue being involved in soccer development in disadvantaged communities," he says.
