YOU would be pardoned for thinking that e.tv's Sunrise anchor Sindy Mabe is an all-work and no-play kind of a woman because of the respect she commands on her show. Though on TV Mabe looks like a no-nonsense and serious person, she has a warm and fun side to her.

Believe it or not, when the mother of two is not on TV, she is pole dancing.

"I do this as a sensual fitness routine at Steel Divas. It is very exciting and refreshing. I do it twice a week. I got bored with going to gym. In the long run I will do public demonstrations," says Mabe.

She has been with e.tv since 2003 and is also a devoted born-again Christian who is a tithe-paying member of Grace Bible Church in Morningside.

"I am a very committed Christian. I attend cell group meetings, I tithe, pay offerings and I am a believer in the God of love who is also a forgiver and a God of favour."

Mabe says she was born again when she was 16 in a tent crusade but slid backwards a few years later.

"In 2007 I recommitted my life to Christ at Grace Bible Church in Pimville, Soweto. I went to the altar call with repenting tears running down my cheeks and my hands helplessly lifted up to heaven. It was a feeling I cannot explain."

Mabe, who owns a production company called Overjoy Productions, which does audio visual productions, says she wants to create wealth through TV production.

"I dream of having my own TV show, but fear, my comfort zone and procrastination are holding me back.

"I want to do a women-driven show that will tell stories that have never been told about women.

"The show will look at women who made it in spite of difficulties.

"I am very passionate about women, specifically black women," says the 40-year-old.

She matriculated at Springs Convent and now holds a national diploma in retail business management and a number of certificates including TV and radio-related qualifications, labour and public relations certificates and has completed the Wits Business School Venture certificate for women entrepreneurs.

In as far as the matters of the heart are concerned, Mabe, who was born and bred at KwaThema in Springs, separated from her customary husband a few years ago.

"Our relationship was strained by cultural differences. He is Xhosa and I am Tswana.

"We also had different expectations from the relationship and our personalities clashed. Sometimes love alone is not enough to sustain a relationship."

Sindy Mabe's firsts:

First boyfriend

"I had my first boyfriend when I was 16 years old. He was my cousin's friend. I broke up with him after he embarrassed me by showing everyone a Valentine's Day card I bought him.

First car

"My first car was an Opel Kadett, a 1994 model that I bought in 1997 when I was an SAA air hostess. I later gave it to my parents."

First overseas trip

"My first overseas trip was to London. We had to catch a connecting flight in Cape Town. I was overjoyed. It was magical.

"When we arrived at a hotel in Cape Town a porter offered to take my bag. I kept on dragging it back because my mother had warned me not to give my bag to anyone because it could be stolen."

First hotel experience

"It was a hotel in Cape Town in 1995. My hotel room faced Table Mountain. I remember looking at this beautiful mountain through my window with disbelief that a girl from KwaThema could be in such a beautiful place.

"I could not believe I had the whole room to myself with my own TV and a king-size bed. I had shared a room and bed with my siblings all my life - so this was an important first for me."
