SHE navigates between the commercial and broadcasting worlds, having been one of the ambassadors for SABC3 and worked as radio presenter for Classic FM.
Thuli Zulu began her career in broadcasting in 2006 as a DJ on the classical music station Classic FM. Prior to this she spent a year working in New York, teaching African literature and directing various shows.
Born and bred in Dube, Soweto, Zulu is proud of her roots.
Zulu, who owns a creative agency called CREATTE, talks to us about Soweto.
What do you like about Soweto?
I love the fact that it has a rich history and is such a vibrant, colourful place.
It has really transformed and has its own identity and is the pulse of Johannesburg, I believe.
It is also becoming an urban chic environment and is one of the top tourist sites in the country.
Which other country has two of the world's iconic brands: Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu, both residing in the same street?
Which are your favourite restaurants there and why?
Well, I grew up in Dube so I would have to say Wandie's in Dube.
Sakhumzi is also a very cool hang-out spot.
Your favourite nightspot in Soweto?
No favourite nightspot.
Favourite hotel or B&B in Soweto
Chaf Pozi in Orlando East Towers is the best.
How would you entertain tourists in Soweto?
I would take them quad biking which is the hottest thing to do in Soweto as the tourist will get to experience Soweto to its fullest - engaging and authentic, as it exposes them to places that they would not normally venture into.
I would also let them stay at the Soweto Holiday Inn as its unique vibe is captivating.
They would also go bungee jumping at the Orlando Towers.
What makes Soweto great?
Soweto is the pulse of arts and culture and also a growing business and an emerging economy contributor to the GDP of this country.
We are developing and harnessing what we have and continue to build.
We even have a state-of-the-art Mall (Maponya Mall) and that's where you can get good hair salons that are urban chic, where there are many talented and gifted stylists, who don't have the classy infrastructure but are brilliant at their craft.
Where would you get the best spa in Soweto:
Roots Day Spa in Diepkloof is a good Spa in Soweto and I believe there'll be many more built in the near future.
My therapist, Susan, is from Soweto but works in the northern suburbs of Joburg and aspires to own her own beauty spa and I know she will.
