Eye for fashion: Hangwani Nengovhela is a fashion force to be reckoned with.
Eye for fashion: Hangwani Nengovhela is a fashion force to be reckoned with.

WHEN fashion designer Hangwani Nengovhela sits behind her sewing machine, she doesn't create the next big trend, she creates art. With each stitch of her needle and every sketch of her designs, the Makwarela-born but Sibasa-bred fashion designer is giving the fashion industry a piece of her passion.

A wife and mother, Nengovhela, whose label is called Rubicon, is a fashion force to be reckoned with. She says Thohoyandou is the inspiration behind her work. We speak to her about her passion.

What do you like about Thohoyandou?

Its rich vegetation and historical sites, especially Mapungubwe which my late grandfather, Professor Victor Ralushai, wrote about. It was declared a world heritage site due to his exceptional report.

What are your favourite restaurants in Thohoyandou and why?

Restaurant by Khoroni Hotel. I'm a businesswoman and this is where one is able to network.

Where do you go for shopping when you are there and why?

I like visiting the markets to buy authentic products. Thohoyandou has them in abundance.

What's your favourite hotel or B&B in Thohoyandou and why?

Poshvilla Lodge. It is extremely beautiful and has a great ambience. I'm also proud of its owner, who happens to be a childhood friend.

What makes Thohoyandou great?

The people are warm and friendly. The smiles you get there, you cannot get anywhere else in the country. They are very genuine and real.

Where do you chill with your friends when in Thohoyandou?

I always visit my childhood friends in Makwarela. There are really some great memories there. If not, I go to Khoroni Hotel. They have entertainment aplenty. You can enjoy a nice meal in one of the restaurants as well.

Where would you go for entertainment as a tourist in Thohoyandou and why?

There are plenty of places! Tshatshingo Potholes, Lupepe Game Reserve and Thathe Vondo natural forest. And the Kruger National Park is only 90km away from Thohoyandou.

What's your favourite shisanyama?

Shayandima is the place to be. Everybody meets there. Whenever we go home for holidays this is our meeting spot.
