Bokang Montjane wins African crown

OVERJOYED Miss SA Bokang Montjane achieved what she set out to do when she was crowned Miss World Africa Continent on Sunday.

"When I went there I wanted my 10th title and I got it. Being crowned the top African girl made me so proud. I am very passionate about my continent."

During the coronation ball the judges select Miss World queens for different continents.

Montjane, 25, was crowned Miss World Africa, beating contestants from Botswana, Nigeria, Ghana, Uganda and Zimbabwe. Miss Zimbabwe also beat the others to make the Top 15 in the Miss World contest, along with Bokang.

The Miss World pageant, which was held in London on Sunday was Montjane's fourth international pageant.

Previous pageants which she had entered include Miss Earth, Miss Universe and Miss International.

Montjane made it to the top seven.

The pageant was won by Miss Venezuela Ivian Sarcos, giving her country its sixth Miss World title.

Miss Philippines Gwendoline Ruais was the first runner-up, while Miss Puerto Rico, Amanda Perez, was the second runner- up.

"Standing there on stage and speaking, knowing that the whole world was watching, made me so happy. It felt good.

"Who knew that a girl from Ga-Mphahlele would one day stand in front of the whole world?

"When I went to the pageant, I was hopeful I would get far. When I got to the Top 7, I was content and at peace."

Montjane said of all the international pageants, her favourite was Miss World.

"It was an amazing experience. It not only showed the world beautiful girls but we also got to show off our talents and the things we did for our countries.

"I enjoyed doing the 'Beauty with a Purpose' feature. I had to do a 5-minute DVD to present to the judges showing what charity work I do at home."

About the other 113 girls, she said: "Some of them are very competitive. They treat the pageant the way we treat soccer.

"They live for it. They have been trained since they were young to compete.

"And then some of the girls were very relaxed and happy to be there, just like me.

"It was a beautiful learning experience."

Sports and Recreation spokeswoman Paena Galane said: "Now she will embark on her new journey as a representative for the African Continent and she hopes to travel around the continent making a difference and touching on issues.

"She is our sports ambassador and we have given her all the support she needed."
