'I Choose to Live' is diabetics anthem

FORMER Generations actor and kwaito artist Tshepo "Howza" Mosese has taken his diabetes awareness campaign to the stage

Mosese performed with Danny K, Kabelo and Teargas on Mary Fitzgerald Square in Newtown, Johannesburg, on Saturday during the Changing Diabetes Outreach Programme. The road shows are sponsored by pharmaceutical giant Novo Nordisk, which has appointed Mosese as Diabetes Youth Ambassador.

The company has also adopted his song "I Choose to Live" as the campaign's anthem.

Mosese, 27, was diagnosed with diabetes in 2003.

With his wife, former Top Billing presenter Salamina at his side, Mosese said: "We thought diabetes was something that only happened to older people.

"This is why awareness and education is so important."

Mosese released I Choose to Live last year.

"I specifically wrote the song to raise awareness about diabetes and how our choices affect our health," Mosese said.

"This song is about the impact of diabetes on the world and the importance of prevention."

Diabetes is now ranked as one of the foremost killers of South Africans, including young people.

The Novo Nordisk Bus - a mobile testing facility - was parked on the square during the campaign to test the public for free.

More than 250 people were screened. At least 20 people were found to be living with the disease and they admitted not being aware of this.

Diabetes is preventable, treatable, and in some cases reversible. The key is a drastic lifestyle change.

World Diabetes Day is marked annually on November 14 and is driven globally by the International Diabetes Federation.

The next phase of the campaign will be held in Sasolburg in the Free State on November 26.
