Fitting Youth Day memorial

THE SABC and Sowetan continue the trend of hosting fitting Youth Day Commemorations with a related event carrying an apt theme: June 16 - What Have We Learnt - What Are we Learnt?

This eighth yearly celebration of the brave emancipatory exploits of South Africa's youth is scheduled for Orlando west, Soweto, on June 16. Sowetan is the media and nation-building partner.

Struggle songs will dominate the repertoire of, among others, the Holy Cross Anglican Church Choir, SABC Choir, Soweto Youth Choir and Ihashi Elimhlophe who will be performing for an audience that will comprise mostly of pupils from Soweto and Johannesburg.

Joyce Dube, senior SABC official for corporate social investment and responsibility affairs, said among the speakers will be Freedom Park CEO and renowned poet Mongane Serote, business personalities Ndaba Ntsele and and Kedibone More, who were among the children who marched from Morris Isaacson High School in Jabavu protesting against Afrikaans as a forcible medium of instruction; and Thandi Ndlovu-Molokoane, sister of Hastings Ndlovu, who was the first young child killed when police opened fire on protesting youths.
