DESIGNER Zanele Ncane, winner of the 16th Vukani Fashion Awards 2010, has jetted to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to do a fashion internship.

The internship is a prize sponsored by the young entrepreneurship programme, Dad Fund, in May last year.

Ncane will be placed at the NGO Barriera do Vasco, where she will assist samba schools to create the elaborate garments for the biggest show on earth, the Rio Carnival, that will take place from March 5 to 10.

"I am very excited and so grateful for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I will make the best of it andshare the experience with other young designers," Ncane said.

With an attitude like that the Durban University of Technology graduate has the potential to become the leading lady of the second generation of South African fashion designers.

She will also work with established and well-known Brazilian designers Sol Azulay and Patrizia D'Angelo.

Azulay was the owner of a famous Brazilian fashion store called Yes, Brazil. At present Azulay runs the independent brand, Le Modiste, that specialises in fashion and decoration.

D'Angelo is a fashion designer and art producer and has worked for several years as the main fashion designer for the beachwear brand, Blue Man.

She ran her own design house and now produces art shows in Brazil.

On her arrival in Brazil the 21-year-old Ncane will be put through a one-week Portuguese language class, before she is placed for her internship.
