Retailer drives school feeding

MOST children at Kholwani Primary School in Jabulani, Soweto, rely on the school's feeding scheme for the day's only meal.

"For most this is the only meal of the day," says Vict-oria Qoyi, the scheme's coordinator. "The children come from very poor backgrounds, with the home led by a single parent. A large number live with their grandmothers and survive on old age grants."

"They find it hard to concentrate due to hunger."

The school also experiences problems from parents who do not want their children in the feeding scheme.

Qoyi says: "Some are reluctant to be included as it would show people they are poor. "

There was no stigma yesterday when a Shoprite truck filled with 200 loaves of bread and five large pots of soup, entered the school yard.

The retail giant, nearing five million cups of soup served in its nationwide feeding programme, came to feed the school's 450 pupils.

Shoprite Group director Brian Weyers said: "The mobile kitchens have enabled the group to reach out across the country to distribute nutritional meals to the poorest of the poor."
