Johnson baby wipes are the best for Andile

PREDICTING the weather is not easy. While some might even say that it is impossible, others claim that it is a science.

Andile Masuku has made a career out of it. As a weather presenter for Morning live, many people await her verdict before they decide what they should wear for the day.

Her childhood dream was to become a pilot. She recalls how she would spend her days dreaming about aviation.

"I used to sit back and count how many planes would fly over our house when I was a child. I was completely fascinated by planes."

Sadly Masuku's childhood dream was dashed by a lack of funds. It was then that she decided to go with her second love, meteorology.

She received a scholarship from the UN that enable her to study abroad.

"The UN was giving out scholarships to young women, who wanted to study something science related. I was daunted by the idea of doing something that had a lot of science and maths in it but I took the opportunity anyway.

" I subsequently got to do my first year in Egypt, second year in Kenya and for my last year I could choose between Australia and the UK. Back then no one knew much about Australia, so I chose the UK."

Masuku's experiences abroad were less than pleasant. She would often want to simply pack her bags and come back home. She recalls the trauma.

"I wanted to leave Cairo after a week. The only thing that kept me there was not wanting to be the softie of the group.

"Fortunately, though, I quite enjoyed my second year in Kenya. It was awesome. I think it's because we looked alike.

"My ability to pick up Swahili easily was also a big help. As soon as I got to the UK I regretted choosing it. It was so boring, I couldn't even get a boyfriend because it was just so boring," she says.

After her international travels and studies Masuku, now a qualified meteorologist, first worked at the South African Weather Service and at E News 24.

Masuku recalls that her first time in front of the camera was not pleasant. "I could not sleep for the first week. It was quite traumatic."

None of the nerves showed on TV, though, and she was soon invited to join the Weekend Live crew.

"The transition from E News 24 to the SABC was quite easy.

"I am more comfortable with being in front of the camera. Sometimes I even forget that people are watching," Masuku says.

Being on TV has had an unforeseen impact on her life. She has found that men are extremely awkward and shy around her.

Masuku recalls a particularly memorable experience, "One man actually choked on his sandwich when we were on a date."

On a positive note she has found that having studied meteorology has helped her immensely as a weather presenter.

"I don't just cram the weather, I study it. I know more about what I'm talking about and I know what I'm saying will have an impact on people."

In future Masuku would like to explore the field of meteorology further and use it to make the world a better place.

When she's not predicting tomorrow's weather, she is fully devoted to her 4-year-old son, Akhile.

"My son is such a gentleman. For instance, he is obsessed with using baby wipes to keep his hands clean."

Masuku tries out some baby wipes and gives her judgement on which she would use on the baby girl she is thinking of adopting.

She first tried Huggies . "I like the texture of these. I would recommend using them on a newborn because they are for sensitive skin and are unfragranced."

She tries baby wipes from Pampers. "These smell divine. They feel thinner than the ones from Huggies. They are ideal for any baby."

Next she tries baby wipes from TLC.

"I think they feel too hard for a baby's bum. They are good for wiping hands, though."

Andile then tries Johnson and Johnson. "I love this smell. It makes me want to go broody again. I like that this smell lingers on after you've used the wipe. It doesn't just disappear with the wind like the others."

Eventually Johnson and Johnson baby wipes get Masuku's vote.
