Bouquets for our nation's best writers

THE nation's best writers were honoured through the prestigious South African Literary Awards last night.

The awards were started in 2005

Founded and managed by the wRite associates, the awards and their four legacy projects are run and sponsored in partnership with the Department of Arts and Culture, National Arts Council, Nutrend Publishers and Sowetan and the Aggrey Klaaste Nation Building Foundation.

Four writers received the K Sello Duiker Memorial Literary Award at a function in Johannesburg. They are Chris Marnewick, HR Tshianane, Kabelo D Kgatea and Siphatheleni Kula.

Ingrid and Dirk Winterbach received the Literary Translators Award.

Karabo Kgoleng and Maureen Isaacson received the Sowetan-sponsored Literary Journalism Award. The Nadine Gordimer Short Story Award for writing in African languages in South Africa went to JJ Ngcongwane.

Breyten Breytenbach, Abraham de Vries and Matthew J Mngadi received the Literary Lifetime Achievement Awards.

The Literary Lifetime Achievement Award went to Sol Plaatje and Etienne le Roux. Mxolisi Nyezwa and Loftus Marais won the Poetry award. The First-time Published Author Award went to Diale Thlolwe.
