Queeneth Ndaba, the woman who kept the historic Dorkay House together, has died.
Her daughter, Mpande, confirmed that her mother succumbed to illness at the OR Tambo Memorial Hospital in Boksburg on Wednesday night. She was 82.
Ndaba, regarded as the heart and soul of Dorkay House, also managed African Jazz Pioneers.
People’s poet Mzwakhe Mbuli said: “She was a moving library in terms of South African music history.
She ran Dorkay House and assisted a lot of musicians. Sis' Queeneth knew everything about local music scene.”
Legendary musician Jane Dlamini, who met Ndaba in 1978, said she was a caring human being. “She was very helpful when we started in this industry.
She knew all the music events that were taking place and would supply artists with the information [they needed].
Even when we had to apply for funding, she would assist when filling in the forms. We used to rehearse at Dorkay House for free, thanks to her. She kept Dorkay House together”
Dorkay House was the home to many musicians including Miriam Makeba, The Manhattan Brothers, Hugh Masekela, Jonas Gwangwa, Caiphus Semenya, Dolly Rathebe, The Skylarks and Abigail Kubeka.
