Actor Mothusi Maxwell Sengwatse attended more than 300 auditions in two years before landing his big break on The Throne.

The 26-year-old Botswana-born actor portrays the role of Moreri on Mzansi Magic's new drama which premiered last week.

"People should keep going. They should never give up; it will eventually happen," says Sengwatse.

"It was horrible. I don't know how many times I sat in my bathroom while taking a shower and crying because I didn't understand what was going on."

Sengwatse, who turns 27 on Sunday, started acting in a school drama in Botswana when he was 14 before his family relocated to South Africa when he was 16.

He dropped out of university where he was studying economics and politics but later went back to study live performance at Afda.

"I had a few auditions as well last year. I made it to the top 10 of the MTV Base VJ Search. I got cut off in the second challenge. Then a month later, I entered another competition, Mzansi Insider, when they were looking for a presenter. Everybody thought I was going to win," he says.

As he waited for his next big audition, he started taking funny videos of himself and uploading them to build his social media following. Little did he know his big break was waiting on his timeline.

"I got a call from a casting director asking if I would be interested in a role they wrote for me. I said 100%."

He started shooting last month and says working with the likes of legendary actor Jerry Phele has been great.

"Life on set has been really amazing. I'm always talking to Jerry. He is the eldest on the show and probably the biggest legend. I'm always asking for advice and nagging him.

"He advised me that the secret to his success is to just do and God will take care of the rest," says Sengwatse.
