Paxton Fielies has blossomed from a socially awkward introvert into an Idols SA singing sensation.

Fielies said she used music to bridge that barrier.

"I use music to communicate because it's a language everyone speaks, that everyone understands. So music is basically my life," she said.

The 16-year-old from a family of five said she discovered her singing talent at seven.

'Idols' top 10 finalist stared death in face

"I was always hyper in pre-school but never wanted to sing. I wanted to dance but then they gave me a solo in church and I think that's when I realised I could sing."

Fielies, who is also the youngest in the competition, has won many hearts with her soothing yet strong voice that has, in the past three weeks, easily filled every corner of the State Theatre during live performances.

"There's so much pressure now because people are expecting me to win. Yes, that is definitely why I joined but people are already making their own assumptions and anything can happen.

"Honestly speaking I am very proud of myself. Yes I entered this competition because I wanted to win but I also entered it to discover myself as an artist, to see what I can and cannot do," she said.

‘Seeing my son will ease sting of elimination’

The Cape Town-born singer said she owed her musical success to her family, mostly her grandparents.

"My grandparents, from both sides of my family, were really big supporters and I think they expected it of me."

The 13th season of the popular singing competition is in full swing and so far, Fielies has been giving her fellow contestants a run for their money.
