Saxophonist and music composer Lefa Mosea fell in love with music at 13, and promptly took up guitar lessons.
It wasn't until he joined the Vusi Mahlasela Music Development Foundation that he became fascinated by jazz especially, playing saxophone.
The Sebokeng-born artist says he always wanted to learn to play the instrument. He says he prefers jazz because it has taught him a lot of discipline.
"In other genres the musicians do not rehearse regularly. With jazz, I have to rehearse every day.
"Perhaps the high standards in this genre is because the people you play for are serious and want perfection only."
After 11 years of learning how to play and compose music, Mosea is launching his solo career with a single titled Amabele.
The 30-year-old describes his sound as contemporary African jazz that is tinged with traditional music styles, and straight jazz.
"Jazz musicians are different because they always paint a picture or telling a story through the instruments and the melodies.
"Through my music I am having a conversation with my fans and giving them a glimpse of my life's highs and lows."
The talented jazz singer is busy with his debut album, whose production is financed by the Nelson Mandela Bay Development Agency.
After spending years at Vusi Mahlasela Academy, Mosea went to study music at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in Port Elizabeth.
He'll be performing at the National Arts Festival (June 29-July 9) in Grahamstown.
