Tu Black are making headway in music with their authentic, fresh hip-hop with a kasi vibe.

This union was formed in 2011 by renowned actor Bongani Masondo and rapper and fashion enthusiast Mpumelelo "Fresh da Real" Sojane.

The duo are definitely a force to be reckoned with. Known by many as Baby Maker on the SABC1 soapie Skeem Saam, the 33-year-old Masondo from Daveyton will now be known as a hit maker.

"We chose this name because when people heard our song they said it was too black and too nice and also because we are two black men, well we are yellow bones," Masondo laughs.

Sojane says he brings his fresh ideas and fashion skills to "the music table".

"I am also a songwriter. I come up with energetic ideas. We work together and decide on the lyrics together, I would also like to focus on Tu Black's image and style," says Sojane.

Tu Black released their first official single as independent artists titled Mtana kaMa this month, which is about a man's fantasies over a woman. The duo write and recite their verses in both vernacular and English.

They explain that their brand of hip-hop represents diverse cultures in South Africa and is a fusion of kwaito and R&B. "We are not trying to sound American, we are original.

"Our beats may be modernised but our lyrical content is purely South African," Masondo says.

Masondo says he has had a passion for the arts since he was young and enjoys it. "We wanna take our music all the way to the top, we also wanna collaborate with local artists to tell original Mzansi stories and grow internationally."
