Zoleka Mandela surrounded by family as she starts radiation therapy

Zoleka Mandela will spend the next six weeks undergoing radiation treatment to help in her ongoing fight against breast cancer.

Zoleka took to Instagram on Tuesday to post a picture of herself undergoing treatment at Olivedale Hospital in Johannesburg.

That's me on the treatment table today with my two therapists positioning me for an external beam radiation (damages Cancer cells) to my chest wall where I had a 19grm x 18cm tumour removed. I was bare chested with my hospital gown in this position with a towel on my legs - that room is FREEZING!!! A blanket was offered to keep me warm and the procedure took all of 15-20mins at the most. It's okay to be around people after treatment, no worries about being radioactive ...    I went back into the waiting room to find Mr. Bashala, my son and daughter all waiting for me! Family support is just as important as any treatment for a life threatening disease like Cancer ... I'm so blessed to have their love, support and encouragement envelope me completely! ❤️ Today was my first session, I have 32 more Radiation treatments to go - I'll need to go into hospital everyday (Monday to Friday) for the next 6 weeks for treatment. #KnowYourCancer #SilenceCancer #RadiationTherapy #BreastCancerSurvivor #Recurrence #LuminalBCancer #LuminalTypeBMammaryCarcinoma #ZolekaMandelaFoundation

Zoleka explained that it was the first of 32 radiation treatments that she would receive over the next six weeks. She has previously undergone several weeks of gruelling chemotherapy treatment.

Nelson Mandela’s granddaughter has not been shy to share details about her battle with breast cancer‚ since being re-diagnosed with the disease in May last year‚ and gave her followers a detailed account of her latest treatment.

“That’s me on the treatment table today with my two therapists positioning me for an external beam radiation (damages cancer cells) to my chest wall where I had a 19gram x 18cm tumour removed. I was bare chested with my hospital gown in this position with a towel on my legs — that room is freezing! A blanket was offered to keep me warm and the procedure took all of 15 to 20 minutes at the most‚” she wrote in the caption of the post.

Luckily‚ Zoleka was able to count on the support and love of her family as she continues her cancer battle.

“I went back into the waiting room to find Mr. Bashala‚ my son and daughter all waiting for me! Family support is just as important as any treatment for a life threatening disease like cancer. I’m so blessed to have their love‚ support and encouragement envelope me completely! ” she wrote.
