Weekly paper Sunday World is standing by the story it published on attempts being made to defraud the family of the late kwaito star Mandoza.
“Anyone who claims to have not spoken to our reporter is telling a serious fib. Sunday World stands by its story‚” said the paper’s editor Abdul Milazi.
The people's poet Mzwakhe Mbuli and Musicians Association of South Africa (MASA) are considering legal action following reports that the poet attempted to defraud the Mandoza family.
The paper reported that Mandoza’s widow accused the kwaito star’s former manager Kevin Ntaopane and Mbuli of writing a letter requesting funds to bankroll record label Nkalakatha Records.
Mbuli rubbished the report saying that he has not written any letter to MASA and even went further to call on the publication to publish contents of the letter.
"They were supposed to publish the letter. Show the world the letter like we are doing with the Guptas and Pravin (Gordhan). Show the letter so that if somebody is a crook or a lie, show the letter, don't make a rumour," said Mbuli.
He said that Southern African Music Rights Organisation (SAMRO) has stringent rules on artists' monies and they would not issue it out just to anyone.
"We need to have a letter here, even when Vuyo Mokoena, Lucky Dube passed on, everybody comes here, so the family would know SAMRO has got strict rules you'll never touch that money of Lucky Dube or Mandoza," said the People's Poet.
Ntaopane said that he was shocked by the allegations made by the paper that he pocketed donor funds meant to assist with Mandoza's burial as well as the supposed letter.
"Mine is simple, I'm just here to listen to what has been spoke about me in the newspapers. I don't even have any idea of what you talking about; I cannot even utter a word of something I don't know. I'm still shocked," said Ntaopane.
Masa said they will seek legal advice on pressing charges against the publication.
"We will seek advise on how can we sue for defamation," said MASA president Thabiso Sithathu.
However, one of MASA's artists, known as Bab' Sithole said that they will be organizing themselves to march to the publications offices in Rosebank.
Mpho has since denied that she has accused Mbuli and Kevin of trying to defraud her family.
