My relationship with Nomvula Mokonyane is that of a 'mother and son', says Mabala Noise's Reggie Nkabinde

Mabala Noise and ANC Youth League Treasurer General Reggie Nkabinde has disputed claims made by EFF leader Julius Malema of an improper relationship between the him and Water and sanitations minister Nomvula Mokonyane.

In a press conference held last week, Malema also accused Mokonyane of "empowering" Nkabinde with tenders.

“Reggie makes money from the Department of Water and sanitation, because he has some special kind of relationship with Nomvula Mokonyane. Nomvula likes them young,” Malema said.

“That's how Reggie became a favourite of Nomvula Mokonyane and then received water and sanitation tenders,” he added.

Nkabinde dismissed the claims, adding that his relationship with the minister was similar to that of a ‘mother and son’.

"My relationship with mama Nomvula is a relationship of a mother and a son. Not only with her. Nomvula and Serge [husband] Mokonyane are my parents, it's something that I have not hidden, and my political mentors and in every platform, whether it's my birthdays everything that I do I've continued to thank them to raise a gallant revolutionary like I am. So today I'm where I am because [of] part of the role they played in my life. So today it can't be that I own Mabala Noise or I'm a TG of the Youth League I would want to distance myself from that relationship. It's not possible," explained Nkabinde.

Mokonyane also refused to entertain the claims made by the EFF leader.

"I have heard and observed what Julius Malema has said. He didn't get a single municipality and because we [the ANC] did very well‚ desperate individuals will say such things. I'm not going to honour his stupidity by responding,” she said.

Asked whether she disputed the claims‚ Mokonyane said: "He has not been fed that information by me. The treasurer general of the ANC Youth League is a child of the ANC and has a right to run his own business.”

Money laundering

EFF leader Julius Malema accused Nkabinde of laundering money through tenders from the Water and Sanitation department and using that money to fund artists in his record label Mabala Noise.

Nkabinde said that the allegations are false and that his company is not doing any business with the government and called on journalists in a press conference in Sandton to do their own investigations into his declaration.

"First thing I must indicate is that Mabala Noise is not doing business with any government.

"You are all welcome to go to the department of Water Affairs and seek a report about Mabala Noise. Mabala Noise is not doing any tender, is not even intending to do any business with government," said Nkabinde.

He further went on to dismiss claims of any funding from the same department and the ANC.

"The ANC has never funded any company, in fact the ANC on its own needs money. It relies on business people to assist it, to find it to run its programs so the ANC can't fund any private company, the ANC can't fund any artist instead what the ANC can do is do what Julius [Malema] has been doing, can book you as an artist to go and perform and its normal," he said.
