Gospel star Dumi Mkokstad has opened up about being a rebel when he was younger‚ claiming that “painful incidents” started happening as a result.

Speaking to Rebecca Malope on SABC 2’s It’s Gospel Time recently‚ the singer wouldn’t divulge elaborate details‚ but revealed that he lost his way at some point in his life‚ adding that he even stopped going to church.

“I was young and I didn’t know any better‚ but I always knew that my calling was to worship the Lord‚” he said.

“Yes‚ I used to fool around with girls and kill time by playing soccer.”

He recalled back to when he entered university‚ pointing out that he got up to a lot of mischief there.

“Our bishop kept asking why I didn’t attend church as often as I used to‚ but I didn’t have answers.

“When I started attending university‚ I live the way it pleased me. I was not accountable to anyone. I did everything young people do‚ because my parents were not around to reprimand me‚” he explained.

He further revealed that he knew that he had to go back to God when he “painful incidents” started plaguing him.

“When painful incidents started to happen in my life‚ I knew what I had to do. That’s when I went back to God.”

During an interview with Move! Dumi said it was in 2013 when he decided to commit his life “back to God‚” claiming‚ “I prayed and sang for my life.”

He added that his hit song‚ Mbize‚ was created at the same time.
