MTV Shuga is back for its fifth season and is set to be filmed in South Africa for the first time ever.

The MTV Staying Alive Foundation and MTV Base have appointed Quizzical Pictures as the production company for the upcoming series of the pro-social drama.

Quizzical Pictures, known for dramas like Rhythm City, Hopeville, Intersexions and Umlilo, is already in pre-production for the fifth series of the eight-part drama series, which will be shot in Johannesburg later this year. The series will star South African actress Mohau Mokoatle, in the role of schoolgirl/singer Bongi, with numerous new roles still to be cast.

Season 5 of MTV Shuga is set to include a new focus on adolescent girls and their vulnerability to HIV infection and unintended pregnancy, alongside other story lines relating to sexual and emotional issues affecting South African youth.

Previously filmed in Kenya and Nigeria, season 5 is being funded by South Africa’s Ministry of Basic Education, PEPFAR (The US President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief), Marie Stopes International and Positive Action.

"We are delighted to appoint Quizzical Pictures to work on MTV Shuga - their understanding of the MTV Shuga legacy, and their appreciation of what we are trying to achieve were outstanding, and we look forward to them carrying the torch forward in South Africa in series 5," said Georgia Arnold, executive vice president of MTV Staying Alive Foundation in a statement.

Monde Twala, vice president, BET, Youth and Music, VIMN Africa added that the show has had great impact in communities and that he looks forward to the venture.

"MTV Shuga is a trailblazing edutainment property that has had real world impact and changed lives by making viewers reflect on their life choices."

The award-winning pro-social multimedia campaign and TV series is broadcast across sub-Saharan Africa, and has screened on MTV Base, MTV, SABC1, MNET and e.TV in South Africa.
