Lady Gaga and Sam Smith nominated for Oscars

Lady Gaga and Sam Smith have been nominated in the Best Original Song category at the 2016 Academy Awards.

They are nominated in the Best Original Song category with Sam picking up a nod for his 'Bond' theme Writings On The Wall from 'Spectre' while Gaga has been recognised for her track 'Til It Happens To You'.

The song appears in the documentary, 'The Hunting Ground', which deals with campus rape in the United States. Gaga wrote on Twitter: ''Til It Happens To You my original score with @Diane_Warren for ''The Hunting Ground'' was nominated for an OSCAR (sic).''

She also added a message which read: ''This nomination lends a voice to victims and survivors all over the world. Thank you to THE ACADEMY for recognising the movement of people who have come together for this film & song in the name of sexual assault.

Myself and Diane are simply honored to represent the voices of so many SURVIVORS (sic).'' Gaga and Sam's songs will compete against 'Earned It from '50 Shades of 'Grey', 'Manta Ray' from 'Racing Extinction' and 'Simple Song 3' from the movie 'Youth'. Sam recently won the Golden Globe for Best Original Song - Motion Picture for 'Writing's On the Wall'.

Meanwhile, 'The Revenant' leads the way with 12 Academy Award nominations. 'Mad Max: Fury Road' is second with an impressive 10 nominations and 'The Martian' has seven nods.
