Botha's life on air pulled to a halt

Lesedi FM presenter Nonn Botha, pictured, is in limbo.

She has been taken off air but not fired.

The SABC has denied that the mid-morning presenter was taken off air, even though Tholoana Moletsane has been hosting the show this week.

Botha came under fire from listeners who complained to the Pan South African Language Board (Pansalb) that she did not speak good Sotho.

Pansalb indicated that as a language board it could get the SABC to take her off air.

Listeners did not only have an issue with Botha's language but they also questioned her name and surname.

SABC spokesman Kaizer Kganyago said he was not aware that Botha was taken off air.

"What I know is that there is a new station manager who wants to make changes to the line-up. The station manager who hired Botha is no longer there."

Botha, who has a five-week-old baby, refused to speak to Sowetan.

According to those in the know, Botha still goes to work every day, from 8am until 1pm.

She does so because she never received an official letter from the SABC firing her.

One of Botha's friends who spoke on condition of anonymity said the incident has affected her negatively. The source said Botha was already blaming herself for leaving Kaya FM.
