Guests who were invited to a top secret location in Oakdene, Johannesburg, for a "thanksgiving celebration" were surprised when they arrived to find that the "celebration" was instead a traditional wedding for Metro FM talk show host Criselda Kananda.

Kananda, in a colourful Xhosa ensemble, said the families were finalising the lobolo negotiations and she invited close friends to witness her first steps as a married woman to Siyolo Dudumashe.

Last month, Kananda shuttled between Durban and Johannesburg for the Metro FM Music Awards as the lobolo negotiations got under way. Speaking to Sowetan, the newlywed gushed: "It was an incredible occasion. We were completing the lobolo negotiations and we were welcoming the groom's family."

The bash, which was held at the house of Kananda's aunt, was attended by her colleagues at Metro FM, including singer Phinda Mtya-Matlala.

"I don't know what we were thinking inviting only 50 people because you know how big black families are. But then again we don't have (Patrice) Motsepe or Khulubuse's (Zuma) budget," joked Kananda.

The menu stuck to the theme of tradition and included dumplings, tripe, chicken feet. "I also contributed to the cooking. We woke up at 4am to cook," she said.

She said they still had plans to tie the knot in a white wedding ceremony later in the year. "We'd like to have a small and private wedding on June 6, but I don't know how it's going to be small after the traditional wedding this past weekend."
