Retired soccer star David Beckham is to receive the Legend of Football Award at the 20th Anniversary HMV Football Extravaganza at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London on September 1.

The 39-year-old star - who played for the likes of Manchester United and Real Madrid during his career - is to be honoured at the 20th Anniversary HMV Football Extravaganza at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London on September 1, which will raise funds for music therapy charity Nordoff Robbins.

Beckham - who joins his former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson and current Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho, among others, in receiving the prize - said: ''I'm incredibly honoured to be receiving this award. When you look at the list of the previous recipients, I feel very fortunate to be considered alongside them. More importantly the night is about recognising the fantastic work that Nordoff Robbins does and raising funds for their vital work.''

Brian McLaughlin, the Nordoff Robbins Governor, said: ''David is, without doubt, one of the world's footballing greats and I am delighted he will be joining us. ''We have had many great nights since this event began and been joined by some exceptional football personalities.

''With David Beckham on our team it guarantees this tremendous tradition will be upheld on the occasion of our 20th Anniversary.'' Beckham was the first English player to win league titles in four countries - England, Spain, USA and France - and he is also the most-capped outfield player in the history of the England national team, with 115 appearances to his name.
