Wedding bells are ringing - big day dawns for sport champ, DJ

IT'S not only Santa's jingle bells ringing this time of year but also wedding bells chiming for brides and grooms across the land.

First it's South African wheelchair tennis champ, Lucas Sithole, who ties the knot with Nontobeko Ngobese today to be followed by Ukhozi FM's DJ Sgqemeza and Nqobile Thungo.

The 28-year-old Sithole is also a motivational speaker and maskandi recording artist, while Ngobese is a university student from Ladysmith, KwaZulu-Natal.

The two lovebirds have been together for four years and have a four-month-old baby.

The proceedings kick off today with a traditional ceremony at his home in Osizweni, Newcastle. Later in the afternoon, they will have a white wedding at Osizweni Community Hall, and two beasts will be sacrificed.

The last leg of the wedding takes place on Tuesday with umabo, the traditional exchanging of gifts between families.

The dashing groom said: "I am excited and this is a huge step in my life. Four months ago I became a father, and now I am getting married."

Meanwhile, Durban readies itself for a bridal bash of epic proportions when Sgqemeza, real name Phumlani Mbatha, dances down the aisle with his attorney bride Nqobile Thungo. The couple would not reveal their big day because they wanted the affair to be private. "I am excited and looking forward to the big day," said Mbatha. The couple met more than a year ago.

Thungo works for a Durban law firm.

The well-known radio presenter who has been with Ukhozi FM for more than six years presents Vuka Mzansi with Zama Ngcobo from 6.30am to 9am on weekdays.

He said he has paid lobola to his in-laws and they had an umbondo traditional ceremony last Saturday to mark the completion of lobola negotiations at his home in KwaCeza, northern KwaZulu-Natal.
